Contemporary$$$

Quaff is reliable and elegant, a place where Toorak locals dine habitually and where strolling shoppers land for a generous, well-mannered meal. Smart, straight-backed young waiters tend the comfortable room that's dressed with starched linen and panelled with dark wood. Added ambience comes courtesy of the great outdoors when Quaff throws open its folding front window. The menu hugs the conservative side of contemporary. Asian influences may be evident, in starters like seared yellowfin tuna with a seaweed and carrot salad, or pork belly with glazed shallot and peanut brittle. For main, try roasted duck served with a generous amount of jus and two squirts of carrot and celeriac puree, or fish pie with a creamy white-wine and truffle sauce. Dessert could be a three-storey mango millefeuille, which may be a little clunky with mango-cream layered between thick pastry; the flavour though is spot-on. Street seating means you can stop for lunch, with a Number 8 tram on the side.
