Royal Oak Hotel

$$$

This old watering hole in what Sydneysiders affectionately call Double Pay is not cheap, but the kitchen delivers on a sharp menu. The varied, fresh mezze platter is enough for four people as a starter. Grilled barramundi is superbly presented, the bland, mainly freshwater species getting a lift from a coriander, pistachio and avocado salsa. The paella for two is delicious, though it would be enhanced by some chicken and some Kiwi mussels instead of the minuscule Aussie ones. But man of the match goes to the outstanding mixed mushroom risotto with white truffle oil and shaved parmesan.
