Middle Eastern$$

Glowing red tea light lamps infuse Safi’s small, white front room with warmth. Service is warm too, by Annie Vartanian, daughter of the chefs, Mary and Victor Philip-Ossian. The family has served share-plates here for 10 years with Lebanese, Syrian and Armenian influences. Don’t skip the dips, especially the muahmarrah, made of walnuts and roasted capsicum with a chilli bite, and the lovely babaghanoush. Golden cauliflower florets, lightly spiced and fried, come with tahini, and crunchy kibbeh (cracked wheat stuffed with mincemeat and onions) are perfect with a squeeze of lemon. It has all the comforts of eating at a friend’s place.
