Secreted down a city laneway, Saint Peter's is a convivial place. Ideal for a casual evening, owner-chef Maurice Esposito's casual trattoria menu nods to its former guise as an ethical seafood place. Wild barramundi might come with a piquant caponata, and local calamari is ably done in the familiar dusted fry. The highlights are house products such as prosciutto served - in season - with figs from the chef's mum's tree in Northcote. The menu can drift towards the conventional. no drawback when the costoletta milanese is so enticingly crumbed, balanced with a cos, caper and radish salad. Lasagne, layered with wagyu sauce, is another faithful dish. The style overall is familiar in the best sense. Saint Peter sits above Melbourne's plentiful casual Italian diners but is not so formal that you can't just wander in. You'll be glad you did when you finish with Maurice's mum's luscious tiramisu.
