Shakespeare Hotel

13/20

The setting screams old-man-pub, so it's cognitively dissonant to find it teeming with young inner-city types. It's basically your extended Surry Hills share-house lounge room. Snaffle a table in the dimly lit upstairs parlour alongside a visually entertaining menagerie of grunge guys, pierced girls, hair wraps and harem pants. The nothing-over-$12.50 (all day) pub grub menu offers everything from a T-bone - to please any remaining oldies hiding near the TAB - to a heaving pile of pork rib racks doused in sticky barbecue sauce. Vegetarians get choices too, including a standout grilled haloumi and roasted vegie salad.
