Shanghai Dumpling

Chinese

The walls may be bare and the decor spare, but at peak mealtimes the seats are almost always all taken. The crowds come for big bowls of soup brimming with neatly folded and wonderfully fresh handmade dumplings, a liberal dose of chilli black bean, fresh lemon and various sauces added from the selection on the stainless steel condiment trolley in the middle of the room. The dumpling selection always includes a few porky offerings, one vegie variety and daily specials such as white fish with just the right amount of zippy fresh ginger (Mondays), the classic combo of chicken, corn and peas (Wednesdays) and popular prawn dumplings (Saturdays and Sundays). Buy fresh and frozen dumplings for home, too: a better option for lunch since your desired dumpling may have sold out by dinner.
