Perched in Chatswood's shiny new entertainment and dining quarter, Shanghai Stories 1938 blends classic with contemporary. Over two floors, diners devour dumplings and huddle over hotpots. The gleaming poached pork and vegie dumplings in chilli oil, sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds, taste as vibrant as they look. The stir-fried rice cake with wild vegetable and shredded pork is more mild than wild, but the kung po chicken packs a satisfying punch. Some seafood would blow the $30 budget, but there's plenty remaining within range.
