It's a little crazy in Din Haikin's funky corner cafe and coffee bar opposite the Erko pub on weekends, when every Israeli food-lover in Sydney turns up for their chicken schnitzel wraps, and hummus plates with mince, falafel and puffy warm pita bread. Hang on, how come that bread is so unbelievably good, warm and fresh? Because like the other breads and pastries, it's baked here by Eric, Din's dad. It's the same hands-on approach with the seriously good Mecca Espresso Dark Horse blend ($3.50), with a chocolatey Colombian Las Naranjos as the single origin of the day; perfect with an awesome babka. Hummus, felafel, Israeli salad, warm pita bread and great coffee make a fine start to a hard day's work at the office kibbutz.
