Kitschy but fun, South Bank Surf Club epitomises Queensland's laid-back attitude where nothing is taken too seriously. This is an ersatz surf club on a man-made beach in Brisbane's CBD after all. The food continues the casual tropical beachside theme but if you're expecting surf club prices you might be disappointed. What the name does mean though is good seafood, served simply. The oceanic scents of sustainably caught Queensland produce waft from the seafood bar littered with fresh catch on ice. Oysters are freshly shucked, served au naturel. Scallops in the half-shell with light and tangy chopped tomato with just the right amount of acidity is perfect, and the fish cake (arguably a cocky addition on any main menu), is lightly spiced with a hint of Thai. Diners might find they need to shell out for sides and while the spice-encrusted Cone Bay barramundi is quality, it's not quantity. Try a seafood platter to share instead.
