South End Cafe

Contemporary

All-day breakfasts are now commonplace but this cafe seems to thrive on the custom of brunchers, which is probably why much of the Mediterranean-tinged menu straddles the fence between breakfast and lunch. Exhibit A: The pea and haloumi pancakes. South End's trademark dish isn't the prettiest thing ever put on a plate - think khaki-coloured pancakes - but they are delish, surprisingly light and fluffy, and every few bites you'll score a mouthful of cheese and sweet tomato relish. Grab a seat in the front room and contemplate the Khalil Gibran quote scrawled across one wall, or simply watch the south Newtownians wandering by, stopping in for coffee or grabbing a kofta burger to go.
