Asian$$

The Spirit House feels like a secret portal to Asia. Walk down lush tropical garden paths and past a vast water lily-filled pond to arrive at the shrine-like setting where a series of pavilions create outdoor dining rooms. The menu has its roots in Thailand but wanders through other Asian destinations, and is designed to be shared as it should be. Seared Hervey Bay scallops come with crunchy toffee and a strike of spice in nahm jim jelly. Lightly chargrilled nigiri beef pairs with a delicately flavoured coconut rice and a herb salad, while a sticky yellow bean beef shin melts in a rich beef stock gravy, freshened with Thai basil. The fish of the day is served whole with a sweet, chilli-tamarind sauce and always elicits exclamations and envious looks. Desserts are largely fruit-based and refreshing, such as a lime posset with ginger-honeycomb ice-cream, or a passionfruit parfait with lemongrass jelly, but there's also a treat served with coffee if you want something more petite.
