Spoonful

13/20

Contemporary$$

With its striped banquettes, brightly coloured bistro chairs, vintage Chinese wedding lanterns and fresh-cut flowers, this convivial Prahran cafe is right at home on High Street's interior design strip. But get in early for that post-pilates genmaicha and upside-down nectarine cake - tables fill fast. Dishes draw on clever combinations of what's best and freshest including bounty from owner Melly Beilby's Kyneton farm. A feather-light golden omelette bursting with creamed sweetcorn gets a lift from jalapeno-spiked salsa verde. Chunks of slow-cooked Middle Eastern-spiced lamb shoulder, roasted sweet potato, shaved fennel and coriander yoghurt scattered with pomegranate pearls is a textural triumph. Another artfully strewn Thai-style tumble of green mango, cucumber, aromatic leaves and shredded confit duck is deliciously hot and sour with loads of zing and complexity. Teaspoon - the pantry-sized provedore next door - has take-home meals, comestibles and sweet treats made with love.
