Sushi on Stanley

Japanese$$

With its rows of tiny, open-fronted eateries, there’s a saucy, almost red-light aura around East Sydney’s main eat street. Jumbled among the old-style Italian red sauce joints is this please-all Japanese. In keeping with its motto of ‘quality food at a not so expensive price’, the formula is tried-and-true Nippon favourites, via a stack of sets and combos, teriyakis and tempuras, along with sushi, sashimi and salads. But the seaweed and tofu salad is abundant and zingy; the udon broth has plenty of oomph; the teriyaki’s tasty; and the sushi simple but effective. Expect to be in and out in record time… No red-light district analogies please.
