Have your say
Laneways and arcades hide some of Melbourne's finest attractions, among them Switchboard, straddling the passageway between Manchester Unity Arcade and Howey Place. On one side sits a tiny kitchenette (the former switchboard) barely large enough for the La Marzocco coffee machine and toastie makers, while on the other is a nook under some stairs with feature wallpaper and 1940s Asian glamour-girl posters. You can't argue with the quality of the Supreme coffee brewed here; espressos ($3) are redolent of cedar, tobacco and woody spices, while milk-based brews sit soft and silky in the mouth. The city's original tiny cafe conjures up toasties, cakes and Coffee Supreme espresso in what used to be the Manchester Unity Building's switchboard cupboard and an adjacent stairwell.
