The Abercrombie Hotel

Good Food hat15/20

This old boozer has been reincarnated as an endearingly bonkers Scottish-pub-meets-American-diner cum hip student haunt. The decor includes tartan-covered booths, a painting of naked ladies being eaten by a shark and book-lined shelves. The food melds British comfort fare such as toad in the hole with dude food such as Philly cheesesteaks. Opt for the deep-fried pods of macaroni and cheese to kick-start the arteries; the pie stack with mushy peas is hearty, the fish fresh and the crinkle-cut chips hot and crisp. Whether it's a childhood favourite bastardised or entirely ingenious, the pub's speciality, a deep-fried Golden Gaytime ice-cream, is a must-try.
