The Alchemist

Contemporary

Eschewing the usual mojitos and margaritas, this cosy, low-lit bar has a periodic table of tipples where the focus is on flavour rather than ingredients. Punters are invited to choose a drink that's, say, fresh and citrusy (the Seal of Approval, perhaps) or boozy and tropical (the Alchemist Zombie) and let friendly, knowledgeable staff do the rest. The Alchemist opened in 2009 but, with its ornate furniture, gold toilets and wax dripping candelabras, it feels as if it's been around for years. There's a small menu of good tapas-like bites (meatballs in sauce; red prawn curry) and live entertainment that includes both jazz and magicians.
