The Carlton Hotel Article Lead - narrow

The Carlton is a heady mix of good, honest pub and quirky cocktail bar in the city's geographical centre. Bizarre taxidermy, flocked wallpaper and shadowy booths abound in the first floor bar, where eclectic customers imbibe in a relaxed manner. The menu steers a modern Mediterranean course, with the parma as its flagship. The beer list is lean and the wine list plays it safe, though it's difficult to argue with the prices. Cocktails are a better bet: a good combination of originals and classics that tends to attract the off-duty bartender crowd. If you're in a group, grab one of the good-value cocktail jugs and head out to the leafy balcony.
