13.5/20

In the year of the small bar, the Duck Inn shows the way forward for that other local: the neighbourhood pub. While the circa-1910 exterior remains, the interior is as fresh as the tulips gracing its dual dining areas - a whitewashed room with daylight-catching windows, plus a rustic space adjoining the wraparound counter. Additionally, bask in the large outdoor courtyard, or cosy up in the library wallpapered with faux books. Attentive staff make the place shine, with warm greetings befitting a Cheers entrance, and eagerly poured samples from the good-value wine list. A gastropub menu nails the basics, such as a velvety carrot and bacon soup enlivened with a chilli oil swirl, and a pleasing charcuterie board of jamon, Danish salami, cornichons, deeply caramelised onions and toasted sourdough. The kitchen can over-stretch with mains, such as a deconstructed chicken pie better left intact, or house-made eggplant ravioli overpowered with dabs of blue cheese. But choc brownie with choc fudge and clotted cream is failsafe fun.
