Modern Australian$$

The red laminate bar, leather stools and tilted mirror live up to all your diner decor dreams, but it's the vintage knick-knacks and a larger-than-life bird mural that turn this hotspot into a cross between grandma's holiday house and a tattoo parlour. Chef and co-owner 'Age' Durrant (ex-Sean's Panaroma and Longrain) creates an ever-evolving menu embracing North American cuisine with a touch of just about everything. Simplicity triumphs in dishes such as fried ricotta balls with heirloom tomato and basil, or chargrilled calamari with salsa verde, but few dishes are predictable. Crisp pork hock with cider caramel arrives with a side of Scandinavian-style chats and smoked egg, while barramundi ceviche with avocado, young coconut and sweet potato crisps hails from the Americas. The inventiveness doesn't always pay off - baked cheesecake with salted caramel popcorn and blueberries was a little too confused - but the playfulness wins you over.
