The Cleveland Street end of Redfern has been missing a relaxed, grown-up place to eat and drink. No longer. Partly responsible for the area's culinary upgrade is this funky, unpretentious place that's a cafe by day, a small bar by night. The breakfast menu puts Latino food through the Sydney filter: try eggs rancheros, a mountain of chorizo, fried eggs, beans and avocado in a grilled tortilla, or the corn fritter with pulled pork. By night, the cocktails are excellent and dinner is a stylish and surprising mix, swerving from kingfish sashimi to gnocchi with nettle and globe artichokes. The Fern is already on its way to becoming a local favourite.
