French

Tall, dark and handsome, this striking laneway-dweller merges modern styling with a menu strong on French classics. Be seated at a dressed table against a backdrop of tall windows and Moroccan-inspired screens. There's a bar down the other side, and vintage French posters line the wall. Dense house-baked bread is offered with flavoured butter - perhaps anchovy and mustard. A glass of chablis sets the mood while you contemplate traditional starters such as garlic-butter snails, charcuterie, or beef tartare. Other dishes present broader flavours of the Med; maybe an entree of tender octopus on discs of potato and chorizo with pickled green chillies. Deeply flavoured bouillabaisse, heady with fennel, is packed with flathead, clams and prawns, while other mains span minute steak, filet de boeuf, duck a l'orange, and pork belly with apple puree. Staff are competent and maybe French-accented, too. Though it's hard to resist a French cheese finale, it's equally hard to say non to strawberry tart with creme patisserie.
