This charming sandstone pub with its colonial verandah has been sitting on this Balmain corner since the 1870s, and it's easy to see why it's still a successful watering hole today. With 14 beers on tap (12 of them Australian), it's a beer-lover's haven. The food isn't bad either. If it's not busy they'll cook you something from the fine-dining Steak House menu; the aromatic lamb rump with sourdough gnocchi arrives drizzled in avocado oil, mint dressing and delicately crushed macadamias. From the standard pub menu, the rack of barbecued pork ribs smeared in a sticky, smoky sauce is a top choice.
