The Mess Hall Article Lead - narrow

Coffee's not the be-all and end-all at Mess Hall; it's more a necessity to power the suits and politicos at the top end of town. A macchiato ($3.80) made with Romcaffe (roasted in Italy and imported) might have lemony astringency but presented as thin-bodied, a little lifeless and on the cool side. The Italian food has more brio, with satisfying salads such as lamb and pearl barley or roasted pumpkin and feta, and restaurant-quality mains such as barramundi fillet with borlotti beans and pickled fennel. Finish this Italian job with a fluffy bombolini.
