Modern Australian$$

The Owl House describes itself as 'a small restaurant'. They're not joking. It's a very small restaurant, with a very small balcony perched above its own very small bar. The small and large share-plate food calls no particular place home, which suits the opium den-wine bar decor and creative art installs. A beetroot and apple salad is an installation in itself, accompanied by a long slim plate with a purple runway of beetroot and a baked 'spoon' of crisp lavosh that makes you laugh out loud. Oysters are given the cocktail treatment with vodka, celery and spicy chorizo, and a main course of braised pork cheek comes topped (surprise!) with a spring roll of pork and fennel. The 'this goes with that' wine and food degustation menu shows a quiet maturity with its perfect matches, right down to the mango parfait with fresh mango and coconut salsa teamed with a Caribbean Holiday cocktail or - perhaps wiser - a sweet wine from Monbazillac.
