The Rose Hotel

This inner-city stalwart just keeps getting better. The beer garden out the back is still the same quirky space (the massive TV screen has a fancy gilt frame) and the menu delivers great basics, pizzas and a few dishes with an upmarket twist such as the warm lamb salad with beans, snowpeas, feta and crumbed pistachios, which was a riot of fresh flavours. The classic wagyu beef burger was a generous tower of meat, bacon, cheese and a very good relish. There's ample seating, but expect large groups of noisy students enjoying themselves thoroughly.
