The Roxbury Hotel

Good Food hat15/20

The Roxbury retains the bones of an old-man pub and is hip without alienating people born before 1990. There's often live music, comedy and trivia, but it's not overwhelming. The kitchen rides the wave seen at the Norfolk and Gardel's Bar: nouveau American fast food. But it's not as self-conscious or expensive - less than $13 buys a basic beef burger straight out of Happy Days, or a delightful haloumi, chorizo and sweet-onion-sauce pup. Steamed dumplings are cheap (with condiments ahoy), but we can't go past the special Sunday hangover cure - an $8 recovery roast roll and nicely greasy chips. As the kids say: 'Hells yeah!'
