The Royal George

Contemporary

The sell is 'the warmth and charm of an old British alehouse', but let's settle for a brick-lined bolthole and downstairs lounge decked out like a hunting lodge for rich weirdos. It's not a bad thing. A trio of sausages - pork and fennel; veal and sage; beef and herb - on mash with spinach, onion jam and mustard dressing is a steal at $16; more so when it's revealed the bangers are house made. It's a small, modern menu done extremely well, with interesting additions such as quince aioli and smashed caper-and-chat potatoes, and the splendid steak-cut chips might just be the best in town.
