The Spotted Mallard

Pub dining$$

Find the discreet entrance, climb the timber stairs and you’ll find a cavernous converted ballroom bursting with Brunswick boho-country cool. There’s the op-shop loungeroom lampshades hanging from the ceiling, Franco Cozzo-esque tables and chairs and, more than likely, a band playing on the side stage. Go to the bar to order from a selection of mostly fried goodies that might include a slab of crumbed lamb ribs or ‘drunken duck’ served in a cardboard box with chunky, hand-cut potato chips. Better, perhaps, is a hearty wild mushroom pie with rich white-wine flavours topped with crispy, golden-brown pastry.
