The Wynyard Hotel

13/20

GPFG suspects this Merivale-owned old-man pub, established 1873, is a bit of an in-house proving ground as there's none of the glitz, glamour or flashing lights that surround Justin Hemmes' sexier establishments these days. Instead, there's tacky carpet, a handsome wooden bar and 'famous' $9.50 specials (fillet steak with mash, and schnitzel with chips and salad, both with a choice of sauces) prepared by a chef whose kitchen is at the end of the bar. Do not be put off, however. It's a beaut place for a cheap weekday feed in a posh bit of town. Fancy, no - but a godsend the day before payday.
