Nestled in a humble setting, this friendly owner-operated neighbourhood restaurant is full of surprises. Well-spaced tables are set with classic crisp white tablecloths and premium glassware. Eastern design elements in the dining room give a clue to the menu, which is spiced with Asian flavours but also looks to Europe for inspiration. Pork belly and scallop paired with a sharp apple and fennel salad makes for a good start, as do half a dozen oysters offered with a smart range of dressings or au naturel for the purist. The tempura soft-shell crab with nam jim sauce comes recommended and doesn’t disappoint with its delicate crunch and tang of heat and spice. Tender confit duck atop a salad with orange segments is sure to satisfy the Gallophiles among diners. The apple and cinnamon souffle of the day is a winner from the dessert list, with close runner-up prize going to the peanut butter mousse with salted caramel ice-cream.

And ... A pared-back $40 lunch menu includes an entree and main dish.

Vibe ... Elegance meets relaxed beachside retro.

Best bit ... Impressive service.

Worst bit ... An uninspiring view of the car park.
