Sister venue to Footscray's Station Hotel, the Wayside Inn delivers warm, gastropub style on busy City Road. Grab a spot in the courtyard on a balmy evening or inside with a view of the open kitchen and settle in. The menu's many little dishes are purpose-built for sharing, among them freshly shucked Clair de Lune oysters with shallot vinegar and robust, meaty house-made black pudding with a crisp apple salad and a sweet-salty pancetta vinaigrette. Love a good steak? They're listed by supplier, breed (choices include Tasmanian Cape Grim and Gippsland black angus) and cut, with sauces such as bearnaise and roquefort butter. There's also a daily rotisserie special (Friday's suckling pig is a crowd favourite). To finish, perhaps some fudgy salted caramel chocolate petits fours. Good deals abound; there's a $12 counter lunch most days, the Sunday lunch deal of $65 a head is pretty sweet, and there's a daily oyster happy hour between 3.30pm and 6pm.
