Contemporary

Cosy, intimate and delightfully unsophisticated, this old-style city pub turns out decent nosh at proper pub prices. The steaks and schnitzels are well known, so we tried the blackboard specials: soft-shelled crab and home-made pie. The crab and salad were on the money, and the pie was big on chunk and doused in spicy gravy with a crisp pastry top. Chips were mid-range at best and maybe the fish sauce was a bit too fishy, but all plates went back empty. There are delightful Squires and Coopers ales on tap and wine in the fridge. Get in early for weekday lunch.
