A. Baker opens next week, September 17, and looks set to enliven the New Acton scene, already well served by Mocan and Green Grout (with the Parlour Wine Room to follow soon). The A. Baker eatery will be open seven days, 7am until 10pm, every day except Christmas Day.
Downstairs a new bar will be open seven days as well, from about 5pm each day until well into the night. There’s a bakery, too, which will supply the restaurant, with bread sold there, as well as wholesale.
The kitchen team comes just about holus-bolus from the former Ten and a Half Catering, Fiona Wright’s defunct business that did the catering at the National Gallery and ran Dieci e Mezzo. Adam Bantock (formerly Dieci) and Bernd Brademann, pictured (who headed the kitchen at the gallery) head the kitchen. (Also, Michael Gray from Ten and a Half heads food and beverage for the Molonglo Group, which is a partner in the venture.) The baker is Ruslan Salbiev, who moves to Canberra with his family from Melbourne, where he worked at Phillippa’s Bakery and Vue de Monde.
A. Baker is the project of the team at Two Before Ten. Owner Chris Dennis says the bar, like the restaurant, has an intensely local focus, with 30 Australian-made spirits available. ‘‘Who knew?’’ he says. ‘‘There are heaps of Aussie vodkas, really good gins and whiskies.’’
