The Smith Street space formerly known as Gigibaba has a new tenant, and talented chef Adam Liston finally has a place to call his own.

Northern Light, a co-production with Liston's wife Genevieve and Glen Bagnara (ex-Chester White, Tazio) will be a bar-slash-eatery with "everything one size, about 20 things on the menu, and slight Asian influence’’, says Liston, who made his name in Adelaide before decamping for Shanghai for a number of years.

Lured to Melbourne as Raymond Capaldi’s head chef at Hare & Grace two years ago, Liston then had his next gig at Fitzroy’s the Commoner cut short by a kitchen fire which closed the restaurant for about three months. It re-opened in June.

Liston gets the keys next week to the 30-seater that was once the hottest spot on Smith Street. Gigibaba licensee Baba Holdings was placed into liquidation in March this year owing the Tax Office around $300,000.

Northern Light opens mid-January.
