Brisbane's first paleo grocery store and cafe is opening in Teneriffe in late May.

Short for "palaeolithic", the premise of the diet is that the human body has never properly adapted to eating foods that weren't available in the palaeolithic era and our modern diet is responsible for many of our health problems.

Followers eschew dairy foods, grains, legumes alcohol and all processed foods, and instead eat grass-fed meat, free range poultry, wild caught fish, vegetables, fruit, berries, nuts and seeds.

According to chef Tracy Hirst, (formerly of Gillian's Garden Cafe in Coorparoo) a follower of the diet, the cafe will serve up a totally paleo menu. But diners won't feel like they're missing out.

“The goal of Primal Pantry isn't to be exclusive or restrictive," she says.

"We are here to provide a warm and welcoming place where people can come to enjoy food that nourishes and heals.”

The cafe, on the corner of Florence and Macquarie streets, will be open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, takeaway meals and to pick up supplies.

It is believed to be Queensland's second paleo cafe, with the first, The Paelo Cafe, having opened in Cairns late last year.

A second cafe, a franchise of the Cairn's original is slated to open in Paddington later in the year.
