Adriano Matteoni opened Piccolo Padre in Rozelle in 2001 before heading overseas to launch Paper Cup in Glasgow and a new cafe in Tokyo.

The former Sydney barista has been in town over summer, consulting at Marcelle, a cafe newcomer at 127Macleay Street, Potts Point.

Matteoni worked on the project from the start, helping to select the site (that of a former travel agent), through to the design and staff training.

The menu is pretty simple fare – breakfast rolls and baked-bean stew to start the day, and roast eggplant and open smoked salmon sandwiches are a couple of the lunchtime options.

Marcelle won’t be an only child.

“They [the owners] are looking at opening another four in Sydney,” he says.
