A faded jewel with high vacancy rates, Oxford Street is finally attracting some white knights. Justin Hemmes is opening at the Paddington end, now the crew from Applejack (The Botanist, Bondi Hardware, etc) will give Oxford Street some love at the city end.

On November 25 they'll open Della Hyde, the moniker a nod to nearby Hyde Park. Co-owner Hamish Watts believes there's a good reason behind the falling fortune of the Darlinghurst end of Oxford Street. "When I speak to the young guys who work for us the way they go out is different. Nightclubs are no longer on trend, they want a drink, something to eat, maybe some light dancing," he says.

Watts says there's a resurgence on Oxford Street and it's driven from the laneways behind the arterial, where small bars have brought new clientele to the area. Della Hyde, which slips into the Q Bar basement space, will focus its design on the glamour of Europe's lobby bars of the 1920s and 1930s. The menu, created by Group Head Chef James Privett, will follow the same script.
