Fans of the Banc restaurant revolution of the Sydney dining scene will shed another tear with the closure of the award-winning Assiette restaurant in Surry Hills.
Assiette's owner-chef Warren Turnbull emerged from the kitchen at Banc restaurant in Martin Place with a posse of budding stars keen to open their own gastro temples.
But many of those restaurants have experienced the same fate as Banc, sliding into the past tense of Sydney's rich dining experiences.
Last year Justin North's Becasse was shut and fellow Banc graduate Matthew Kemp briefly reinvented Balzac restaurant in Randwick as Montpellier Public House before it too shut.
Turnbull placed the toqued Assiette on the market last year, wanting to devote more time to his New Zealand restaurants, but he is yet to secure a buyer.
He will rebirth Assiette this weekend as a more accessible restaurant, Albion St Kitchen.
