Just when you thought Sydney's Mexican explosion had hit the pause button, it's time to dust off the pinata sticks because one of the hottest Mexican tickets of recent years is opening in the city.

Barrio Chino, a Mexican bar-restaurant owned by restaurateurs Peter Lew and Nicole Galloway, has boomed despite being located on the hard-hit Bayswater Road at Kings Cross.

It will now open a spin-off venue in the Spice Cellar site, which was part of the real estate once occupied by the Martin Place-based Banc restaurant group.

Barrio Chino owner Peter Lew confirmed Barrio Cellar will open mid-May.
