Basement bar Twig & Berry opening soon

Natascha Mirosch

Brisbane's bar scene continues to thrive with basement bar Twig and Berry slated to open off Commercial Road in Newstead next month.

The name, says co-owner John Lester, refers to both the fit-out, by Brand + Slater, and the plant-filled outdoor courtyard that includes a vertical garden and recycled wood.

"It's a bit different, in that it's in a sub-basement and it's removed from the street," Lester says. Accessed via a driveway and a set of stairs, it looks set to be a secret little watering hole, which would seem to be exactly what the owners are aiming for.

"The idea is for it to be a relaxed local bar - for people in the know to pass around," Lester says. Licensed for 100, the bar will seat around 60 with both indoor and outdoor options.

Lester has a hospitality background but currently works as an engineer, while business partner John Loth has been a full time publican in Yatala. He says their plan was to create a bar they would like to drink at and one that welcomes everyone.

The drinks list has been designed with a something-for-everyone philosophy, Lester says, with cocktails using top quality spirits as well as a changing beer and wine list, including local craft beer. With a bar focus, food will be minimal with platters of cheese and charcuterie.
