Not so long ago George Street was the most direct arterial to exit the centre of the CBD in search of somewhere great to eat. Now the main road, in the midst of a light-rail upgrade, is at the centre of the CBD's dining rebirth.

A rash of new eateries are on the way, from Bistro Guillaume (on the corner of George and Jamison), Nathan Sasi's Mercado and Indu (on George, near Angel Place).

The giant Urban Purveyor Group – which has Sake and The Cut in its stable – has touted a new Italian restaurant opening. UPG is tight-lipped about the exact location, but word on CBD streets is it is headed into a site on the corner of George and Essex Streets, where it would have The Morrison and Pei Modern as neighbours. A smaller, quicker version of Sake is also believed to be part of the play.
