Argentinian barbecue restaurant Che Asado at South Bank announced its immediate closure on Monday.

The Ole Restaurant Group venue has been open for just over a year.

Che Asado closed in response to compliance issues arising from its custom-made charcoal asado grill. The restaurant, which is located in a residential area, was told by landlord South Bank Corporation, and Brisbane City Council to replace the charcoal grill with a gas grill.

"The venue has been extremely successful but the price to rectify issues with extraction would not be viable. We felt our hands were tied – how can we cook authentic Argentinian food without cooking on charcoal?" the group's general manager Luke Stringer said.

The Ole Restaurant Group is working on a new Mexican concept, but is waiting for building reports before setting a reopening date, Stringer said.
