Brisbane's Story Bridge to transform into food market

Brisbane's Story Bridge is set to be closed to traffic and transformed into a food market for one night on July 5.

Hamilton's Eat Street Market will be running the market as part of the celebrations for the landmark's 75th birthday. It is believed about 50 food vendors have been invited to take part, including many Eat Street regulars.

The Brisbane City Council has agreed to approve a maximum of four events annually that close the bridge.

The bridge was opened on July 6, 1940 and is now used by about 100,000 vehicles per day.

According to the council's website, the cost of closing the bridge is more than $50,000.

About 20,000 people will be allowed on the bridge at any one time for the food market.

Eat Street's John Stainton declined to comment on the event.
