Canberrans may have thought they were finally on the forefront of what's new and fashionable, with Jamie Oliver's Italian restaurant opening in Civic and an IKEA on the horizon.

But local hopes have been dashed, with the announcement the ACT will be the only jurisdiction to miss out on a Frankenstein-like combination of fast foods: Pizza Hut's new Cheeseburger Crust pizza. And it's because of another "promotion" so secret that Canberrans are not allowed to know about it.

The new crust, which will not be part of the permanent menu, features eight hamburger patties, drenched in cheese and fitted around the outside of a pizza. It has been estimated to contain almost 7000 kilojoules, roughly equal to the average adult's entire daily intake.

The Australian crust features two fewer patties than its British counterpart, which had 10 and left British stores in November 2013.

While Sydneysiders could begin ordering theirs immediately, the fast food chain revealed this week the ACT would miss out.

A spokeswoman for Pizza Hut said Canberra had a separate promotion running, preventing the new cheeseburger crust from being sold in the territory.

''Pizza Hut ACT is currently running a separate promotion which does not involve the Cheeseburger Crust pizza,'' she said.

''This however, does not mean that it will not be made available in the ACT at a future date.''

When pressed further for details of the campaign, Pizza Hut said it was unable to name it.

''Pizza Hut is running a separate promotion with a modified menu which, for competitive reasons, cannot be discussed with the media,'' the spokeswoman said.

Tragically for Canberrans planning to make the run across the border to fulfil their urges, Queanbeyan will also miss out on the new crust.
