Changing the way we source food

THERE'S a big cultural shift at the moment that is part generational and part global, spurred on by the very real need to fix the problems inherent in the food system. We keep seeing food prices going up, but it's not just the farmers and producers' costs that are the problem, it's the transport and fuel costs involved in needlessly shipping fresh food around the country. We need to question a lot of what goes on and get back to food being a local resource and a great source of nourishment for everyone.

There's a real groundswell of people who are going to make this the most extraordinary food and ideas event ever held in Sydney. But the real legacy is the spirit behind it is actually a community one, and everyone will reap the benefits. People are coming forward not only with produce, but with ideas and suggestions and ways of connecting. We're all learning together about what is possible, and there is great joy in that. Urban gardeners, farmers, pig breeders, chook owners, those with a pot of herbs on the balcony, everyone can be a part of this idea.

Food is one area where we don't have to feel helpless. We can all buy food that is local and seasonal. People are increasingly realising we can change things by following a different path. The only thing that will change the food system is people with better ideas - and we think this is a better idea.
