The award-winning chef from the Grand National in Paddington fires up the burners at his own venue on Tuesday.

Ian Oakes, who nabbed a bag of hats during the heady food days at the Grand National, opens Drake Eatery in the former site of Robert Marchetti's La Macelleria on Curlewis Street, Bondi.

The restaurant joins Sydney's 2015 winter vintage, Oakes setting out to create the sort of place he'd go to on his day off.

The menu [one size fits all for lunch and dinner] features classics such as chicken liver parfait and slow-roasted lamb shoulder. We like the sound of blue-eye cod with celeriac, walnuts and farro, and sides such as spiced grains, almonds, labne and pomegranate, and another of roast pumpkin, streaky bacon and brussels sprouts.
