A cafe and cooking school has opened in an unlikely spot - a semi-industrial estate in Salisbury.

Sally Lynch of Taste Trekkers recently sold her Yeronga home and cooking school and opened Big Vintage, an eclectic collection of industrial furniture and homewares. Last month she started cooking classes in the warehouse with participants gathering around an old tool bench.

"People think it's pretty cool being able to be in this casual space, surrounded by some quirky stuff," Lynch says.

That quirky stuff includes heavy hand-planed Indian chopping boards, colourful chapati rolling pins, ornate platters and recycled linen tea towels, among the ship's lights and railway clocks.

Lynch also leads food tours to Brisbane's food hotspots, including Inala and Sunnybank, as well as food-centric trips abroad. Her cooking classes come in a range of themes.

"I do have quite a lot to choose from; here are some specifically designed to appeal to blokes for example, like BBQ and Things on Sticks, as well as One Pot Winners and Pork and Pickles, but you can come to me with an idea and I'm happy to teach it," Lynch says.

The cafe within the warehouse sells Genovese coffee, sweet treats and a big pot of soup.

Big Vintage is at 7 Commerce Street, Salisbury. Classes are $95 per person with a minimum of six participants, 0408 321 822, bigvintage.com.au, tastetrekkers.com.au
