Collingwood to score flash new Chinese diner Lee Ho Fook

If you're a child of the '70s, the name of the restaurant popping into the Smith Street, Collingwood, space that was once Boire may ring some bells: Lee Ho Fook. Got it yet? Here's a clue: Seen a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand? No? Lee Ho Fook is named for the restaurant mentioned in the late Warren Zevon's 1978 hit Werewolves of London, and it's being brought to you by restaurateurs Peter Bartholomew and David Mackintosh, who co-own the MoVida restaurants and Pei Modern, among others. Their new Chinese diner will be helmed by Sydney chef Victor Liong, who arrived in Melbourne last Wednesday and was most recently sous chef at the Hemmes family's hip Chinese juggernaut, Mr Wong. Before that, Liong worked for Mark Best at Marque. Best, who is in business with Mackintosh and Bartholomew at Pei Modern, recommended Liong for the job. Bartholomew is a Zevon fan, hence the name. Lee Ho Fook will be ''a good neighbourhood restaurant'', Liong says, ''with a menu that's got regional focus as well as being produce driven.'' No mention of a ''big dish of beef chow mein'' yet. The 50-seater is scheduled to open by late June, for lunch and dinner five days a week. Aah ooo!
