Nearly three years after Jones the Grocer pulled the pin on its flagship Woollahra store, the landmark Moncur Street building will finally be rebirthed as a food venue. Coogee grocer Maloneys will open a new store at the corner site in late November. "It has taken us 18 months to get there; I've got half a head of grey hair to show for it. One of the restrictions with the site is not having a cafe, so we'll only do takeaway coffee," says Moloneys co-owner Joanna Matthews.

After the departure of Jones the Grocer, the Woollahra site flirted with a fashion pop-up but otherwise sat empty. With near neighbour The Woollahra Hotel selling last month for a rumoured $30 million, activity on the street has picked up. Matthews is optimistic the well-heeled village needs a Maloneys-type store, which mixes fruit and veg with an upmarket range of food products.
