Daniel Son opens in Murrumbeena

Mother-and-son team Trish and Todd Pryse have been fuelling the south-eastern suburbs with good coffee for the past nine years. Trish opened Brew Cafe on Poath Road, Murrumbeena, in 2004 and, three years later, moved on to Mr Burch in McKinnon. Three weeks ago, the pair returned to Murrumbeena and opened Daniel Son. ''I used to help mum on weekends when I was at uni,'' Todd says, ''and then I decided to go into business with her.'' The pair have turned two shops that were formerly ''an esoteric hippie shop and an old-school boot repairer'' into a 35-seater cafe for breakfast and lunch, complete with a Slayer espresso machine using Coffee Supreme's South Blend. The menu is all about sandwiches, a popular one already proving to be the ''Inglorious Bastards sandwich with pulled-pork fritters, coleslaw and home-made barbecue sauce'', Todd says. The cafe's name is a reference to the 1984 movie The Karate Kid and to Todd's stepfather, Daniel. ''I'm the only son; the name suited us,'' he says. Daniel Son is open daily.
